PREPARING STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS
We understand that every student learns differently. To address this, the Palm Springs Unified School District offers a 4th grade through 12th grade, blended, online school. At Desert Learning Academy our goal is to help families and students build a strong foundation for success through high school, college and beyond. Students complete their assignments in an online program in conjunction with in-class instruction and support. This any time, anywhere style of school attendance provides flexibility that some students may need. To ensure success, students are placed on a 1-3 day instructional schedule based on their needs. We at DLA strive to provide a high quality program that meets the needs of the whole student.
There are many options for independent study online learning. Our mission is to create a high quality program that sets itself apart from all others in the following ways:
1. High Expectations-Academic support is our priority. Home schooling is a big step for the entire family. We have created a program that provides support for the parents as well as the child. Parent/guardian support appointments are available throughout the week so that child, parent/guardian and teacher can work together as a team to provide the best possible opportunities for success. The online content is blended with in-class, direct instruction from highly qualified teachers. The courses engage students through media-rich instruction, interactive labs, and online content. 2. Goal Setting-Working independently can be a challenge for middle school students. Each child is paired with a Lead Teacher to motivate and guide them. This teacher helps them set daily, weekly and long term goals.
3. Meeting the Needs of the Whole Child-Students can eat lunch with their peers, participate in cooperative group activities, conduct hands-on Science experiments, go on field trips, and be a part of Art, PE and Leadership classes. A need for flexibility is why many families seek home schooling. We provide several program support options to meet the specific needs of each child. Many of our students attend 2-3 days per week. Some, however, only attend for 1 hour per week. Teachers work with parent/guardians to determine what is the best instructional model.
4. Community-We work hard to provide a place where students feel wanted, safe and a part of something great. Students get opportunities to create healthy peer relationships in a fun environment. Students can eat lunch with their peers, participate in cooperative group activities, conduct hands-on Science experiments, go on field trips, and be a part of Art, PE and Leadership classes. Parents and teachers work closely to create a team that supports each student.
