Supporting Families in Middle School Online Distance Learning
We understand that in these challenging times every family is making new decisions regarding their child's education. To address this, Desert Learning Academy Middle School has created an even more flexible schedule of instructional choices for children in 6th-8th grade. Students participate in a flexible hybrid (Hy-Flex) schedule dependent upon their academic need. All students come to two Zoom classes per week and meet with their lead teacher once a week. On campus attendance ranges from once a month...to four times per month. Students needing more intense academic support will be required to come more often. Our Edgenuity learning platform provides a high quality digital experience. This is NOT Google Classroom distance learning...this is a family friendly, any time-anywhere, rigorous learning option within Palm Springs Unified School District. Desert Learning Academy strives to help families and students build a strong foundation for success through high school, college and beyond.
Our mission is to create a high quality program that sets itself apart from all others in the following ways:
1. High Expectations-Academic support is our priority. Home schooling is a big step for the entire family. We have created a program that provides support for the parents as well as the child. Parent/guardian support appointments are available throughout the week so that child, parent/guardian and teacher can work together as a team to provide the best possible opportunities for success. The online content is blended with in-class, direct instruction from highly qualified teachers. The courses engage students through media-rich instruction, interactive labs, and online content. 2. Goal Setting-Working independently can be a challenge for middle school students. Each child is paired with a Lead Teacher to motivate and guide them. This teacher helps them set daily, weekly and long term goals.
3. Meeting the Needs of the Whole Child-Students can eat lunch with their peers, participate in cooperative group activities, conduct hands-on Science experiments, go on field trips, and be a part of Art, PE and Leadership classes. A need for flexibility is why many families seek home schooling. We provide several program support options to meet the specific needs of each child. Teachers work with parent/guardians to determine what is the best instructional model.
4. Community-We work hard to provide a place where students feel wanted, safe and a part of something great. Students get opportunities to create healthy peer relationships in a fun environment. Students whose families want their children to participate with other students will be able to come to campus. They will eat lunch with their peers, participate in cooperative group activities, conduct hands-on Science experiments, go on field trips, and be a part of Art, PE and Leadership classes. Parents and teachers work closely to create a team that supports each student.
